Exhibition: Fashion Statements @ Amsterdam Museum
Apr 30 – Sep 9 all-day

Tiny waists and (hence) corsets are on show at the Amsterdam Museum where the 18th and 19th century costume collection is given an airing. What are these clothes telling us about the conventions of the time and their effects on the wearers? And are our modern-day equivalents equally restrictive and prescriptive in their own way? A number of designers have taken the costumes as an inspiration and created their own. Fashion Statements is on until September 9

Architecture Day – Amsterdam @ Various locations
Jun 14 – Jun 16 all-day

During Architecture Day you can experience new architecture, undiscovered places and unique tours. The theme for the year 2019 is “Through the eyes of …”. View the landscape of an artist, cyclist, a historical figure, a user and of course, the builder and architect. They show you how they think about design, technology, materials, sustainability and use. Because the city and its buildings are used and experienced by real people.

Open Air Theatre @ Vondelpark
Jun 15 – Sep 8 all-day
From June through September every year, the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre presents a programme packed with festivals, dance, cabaret, jazz, children’s theatre, stand-up comedy and all genres of music.

Cultural fun for everyone

Head to the Open Air Theatre in the Vondelpark to catch unique summertime performances. From 5 June until 8 September 2019 you’ll find a lot going on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free, although all voluntary donations are appreciated. During May and September 2019, there are special events, markets and one-off festivals taking place.

Theatrical heritage

Amsterdam’s Vondelpark is steeped in musical and theatrical history. The ‘Vondelpark Parties’ were organised in the park and the Music Pavilion and Vondelpark Stage both hosted music, operetta and dance performances over the years. The Vondelpark Open Air Theatre sprang into life in 1974, combining the ‘Vondelpark Parties’ and so-called ‘Happenings’ – the name given to the performances organised at the time.

For more information and full programme listings, check theVondelpark Open Air Theatre website .

Open Garden Days @ Amsterdam
Jun 15 – Jun 17 all-day

or one weekend only, visit the pristine gardens of some of Amsterdam’s finest canal houses and experience the quiet oases during Open Garden Days, taking place every June.

Amsterdam gardens open to the public
Hidden behind the stately façades of the houses along Amsterdam’s canals lie some of the city’s best-kept secrets: private gardens. For one weekend in June you can look behind these impressive canal-side homes and step into a completely different world, where a quiet green oasis welcomes visitors.

Canal house life
Very few of these canal house gardens are usually open to the public year round, but each year some 30 of them are accessible to visitors during Open Tuinen Dagen, or Open Garden Days. Presented by the Museum Van Loon you’ll see both classic and contemporary gardens, all beautifully manicured with hedges, ponds and fountains. Indulge yourself and romanticise the canal house life and how the other half lived as, according to the Open Garden Days website, many of these stately homes were occupied by families only in the colder months, vacating to their summer estates when it got warmer.

For more information
A ticket allowing access to all of the gardens costs €20 at the door, €18 if you buy in advance. You can purchase tickets in advance via the Museum Van Loon website, exchanging your voucher for a ticket on the day of the event. The gardens are open from 10:00 to 17:00 on each day of the event.

International Day of Yoga celebration @ Dam Square Amsterdam
Jun 16 all-day

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. There are various types of yoga including (but not limited to) hatha yoga and Ashtanga yoga. The ‘birth’ of yoga has thought to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions, however, it was most likely to have developed somewhere between the 5th and 6th century in ancient India.

Today, yoga is practiced in various forms worldwide and is recognised to promote both physical and mental health.

In 2014, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 21 June the International Day of Yoga. The UN has dedicated this international day to this universal element. Since this declaration practitioners in more than 100 countries have planned events around this date to commemorate the International Day of Yoga.

In a time of social and therefore often individual unrest, a new movement is growing that bears a counter-sound – a sound of harmony, peace, and well-being. This manifests itself, among other things, in the growth of yoga activities, yoga studios, and yoga groups. Amsterdam is a city of diversity, a city where everyone can express their own identity in freedom. A city with a high concentration and variety of yoga studios and schools, International Yoga Day Foundation i.o. (hereinafter: The Foundation) wishes to bring the International Yoga Event to Dam Square, Amsterdam on Sunday 16th June 2019 from 12-19 h

In the middle of the cultural district of Amsterdam, the Foundation aims to inspire and present a new culture of well-being, health, harmony under a blanket of care and attention and to present it to the public. This international character resonates with the DNA of Amsterdam to promote well-being, harmony, and health in everyone’s existence, in line with the individual needs. Amsterdam has an international character, where everyone is welcome and well-being is central.
The Foundation has made the choice to organize the event on the Sunday before 21 June – to make it more accessible to the general public. The event will be freely accessible to everyone because yoga is practiced worldwide by groups of all ages, all backgrounds, and all possible physical conditions. We expect to be able to host approximately 4000 visitors for International Day of Yoga.

Visitors to the event can expect the following :

The central yoga session will be supervised from the stage, the participants will then be with their yoga mats at the event area.
Food stalls offering a range of international (healthy) vegetarian food and drinks
Workshop stalls where visitors can learn more about yoga, meditation and the art of living.
Sponsors stalls to promote their product/service.
