Tiny waists and (hence) corsets are on show at the Amsterdam Museum where the 18th and 19th century costume collection is given an airing. What are these clothes telling us about the conventions of the time and their effects on the wearers? And are our modern-day equivalents equally restrictive and prescriptive in their own way? A number of designers have taken the costumes as an inspiration and created their own. Fashion Statements is on until September 9

Cultural fun for everyone

Entry is free, although all voluntary donations are appreciated. During May and September 2019, there are special events, markets and one-off festivals taking place.
Amsterdam’s Vondelpark is steeped in musical and theatrical history. The ‘Vondelpark Parties’ were organised in the park and the Music Pavilion and Vondelpark Stage both hosted music, operetta and dance performances over the years. The Vondelpark Open Air Theatre sprang into life in 1974, combining the ‘Vondelpark Parties’ and so-called ‘Happenings’ – the name given to the performances organised at the time.
The SummerConcerts powered by BankGiro Loterij present two months of wonderful concerts, from classical to jazz and from pop music to film scores.

During the entertaining Jazz in de Gracht Festival from 29 to 31 August, the audience can enjoy music performed by jazz artists who will pass by the canal quaysides in The Hague on characteristic, flat bottom boats.
From jazz to funk
The free Jazz in de Gracht Festival takes place on the beautiful Groenewegje, Dunne Bierkade, Bierkade as well as this year’s new location, the Hooikade.
Jazz, in the broadest sense of the word, forms the basis of the festival and the music features jazz, blues, Gypsy jazz and Brazilian sounds. This year’s line-up will be available on the festival website.
Jazz in de Gracht is not just for the real jazz enthusiast but is also intended for a much broader audience.
Concerts by boat
What makes Jazz in de Gracht particularly special is that audience members can stay right where they are on dry land as the stages, and the artists, float by. As soon as a boat leaves from a stop, another one comes along to fill its spot. On all 3 days the canals will be swinging to jazz and other like-minded music.
The boats will stop at 6 ‘boat stops’ for 30-minute concerts on the Dunne Bierkade and Groenewegje.
A plethora of different food trucks will be positioned along the canals selling culinary delicacies.
Jazz in de Gracht is only possible thanks to the participation by and donations from many companies and private individuals who support the festival.
Check the website of Jazz in de Gracht for more information and the complete schedule.

Open-air theatre in Wassenaar
Enjoy an open-air theatre experience from 29 to 31 August and 1 September with 2 fabulous performances by the Illyria theatre company. With productions of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ and ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’ on the beautiful grounds of Raadhuis de Paauw in Wassenaar.
The award-winning British Shakespearean open-air touring theatre company will perform ‘The Tempest’, Shakespeare’s raucously funny comedy, on 29 and 30 August. On 31 August and 1 September they will perform ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’, an exciting adventure for children.
The magician Prospero is marooned on an island with his daughter Miranda. With the assistance of Ariel, a powerful air spirit he keeps in servitude, he conjures up a storm to shipwreck his enemies on the shore of the island. Inexorably they are driven towards the centre of the island to answer to Prospero, until Prospero learns that Miranda has met and fallen in love with Ferdinand, the son of his enemy. What will be greater? His thirst for revenge or his aptitude for forgiveness?
The play, believed to be the last that Shakespeare wrote single-handedly, is lyrical, thought-provoking and raucously funny. More than 400 years after it was written it still has the capacity to surprise.
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’
Like all the stories in the towering literary classic One Thousand and One Nights, this play is packed with cliffhangers, larger-than-life characters and laughs galore. Young Ali Baba stumbles across an enchanted cave when he overhears the magic words that open it: ‘Open Sesame!’. Inside the cave he finds untold amounts of gold and jewels, and takes some of it home. But when the Robber King comes looking for the missing treasure supported by an army of 40 angry thieves, will he and his family survive?
This is the perfect summer fun for thieves and vagabonds aged 5+.
Illyria was created in 1991 by Oliver Gray. Illyria’s refreshing and clear adaptations of the classics have inspired and entertained audiences ever since in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Canada. The company has won international acclaim for its lively, innovative approach to Shakespeare’s plays and its high quality shows for families.
More information about the touring company can be found on the website of Illyria.
Authentic Elizabethan experience
lllyria has developed a unique Shakespearean style. It achieves the seemingly impossible by performing Shakespeare’s plays unabridged, with only a handful of actors, a few props and no scenery. The productions are slick, physical and imaginative in execution, being inspired by the performance techniques of Elizabethan touring troupes.
For an authentically Elizabethan experience, Illyria performs Shakespeare’s masterpiece on its own Globe-like stage, in the open air, against the backdrop of the beautiful mansion. The shows go on rain or shine!
‘The Tempest’ will be performed at 19.30 hrs. on Thursday, 29 August and Friday, 30 August. ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’ will be performed at 15.00 hrs. on Saturday, 31 August and 14.00 hrs. on Sunday, 1 September. Performances take place at Raadhuis de Paauw (Raadhuislaan 22) in Wassenaar.
The gardens open 2 hours prior to the show and catering is available on site. Bring your own chair, a picnic hamper and perhaps some rain gear, but no umbrellas are allowed. Please note: Rain does not stop the performances!
