Tourist Guide to Warsaw is a dark comedy which addresses the issue of the first- and second-generation Holocaust survivors and their claims regarding possessions stolen during the Second World War.
With a cast of characters including your typical nightmare of a Polish Jewish mother, a man who survived a childhood dominated by the Shoah and his mother, a neurotic over-40 still single librarian who drives you crazy, the sly shyster lawyer and the irresistible artist model.
Hebrew with English surtitles
The play will be performed in Hebrew with English surtitles. Because it is a very funny and physical play, you really do not have to be able to understand it word for word to be able to appreciate the humour.
Stichting Rainbow is bringing the play to the Netherlands to introduce audiences to top class Israeli culture and to combat anti-Semitism.
Tourist Guide to Warsaw will be performed at 20.15 hrs. on Frday 24 Jan at Imperium theater, Leiden
Oude Vest 33e 2312 XR te Leiden and on Sunday, 26 January in the Zeeheldentheater (Trompstraat 342) in The Hague.
Festivities traditionally take place on Amsterdam’s Dam Square and around the historic Nieuwmarkt/Zeedijk neighbourhood. Each year a loud and lively parade makes its way through the streets to celebrate a new zodiac animal: it’s the Year of the Rat in 2020. The Lion and Dragon Dance Parade starts at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple on Zeedijk at around 1 pm Fo Guang Shan usually has a whole cultural program of New Year activities. The parade route goes along the Geldersekade to Nieuwmarkt, where a street party follows the parade. Expect to hear lots of noise from drums, firecrackers, and fireworks.
Before or afterward head to one of the tasty Asian restaurants in the neighborhood. Keep in mind places will likely be busy so make reservations if you can.
Here are some tips:
Dim sum at Oriental City will make your tummy happy. On Saturday and Sunday you may have to wait in line for a bit. www.oriental-city.com
Nam Kee is the classic choice when you are going for Chinese food in Amsterdam. The menu is super extensive and the portions are huge.
Try out Tibetan food at Tibet Restaurant. If you like it hot and spicy, order some of the Sichuan dishes.
At A-Fusion you should be able to find something for everyone in your group. They serve a good mix of modern Chinese Asian fusion dishes.
Thai food is always a popular choice and the food at Thai Bird or the snackbar across the street hits the spot.
Martin Luther King Tribute and Dinner
On Sunday, 26 January Overseas Americans Remember (OAR) will sponsor the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute and Dinner at the Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar. The dinner and commemoration are geared to families.
It was in 1986 that the Martin Luther King holiday was first commemorated in the United States as well as by a group of American women in Wassenaar. The tribute to Dr. King has been held each year in The Hague since that time.
Civil rights movement
When one thinks about the Civil Rights Movement, there are no words. Dr. King led the movement and the hundreds of thousands who followed him shared his belief in non-violence and his love and commitment to the United States of America and the dignity of people everywhere.
So much has improved since Dr. King first spoke of ‘His Dream’, but the battle to eliminate racism and discrimination is still a task for today and tomorrow. The message and motto of Martin Luther King Day is a challenge for all people: ‘Make this a day on, not a day off!’ In other words, do something to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.
The commemoration will feature a number of distinguished speakers as well as music integral to the civil rights movement.
Come on Sunday, 26 January at 17.30 hrs. for a simple dinner full of friendship and lots of goodwill at Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar (Zijdeweg 54). You are encouraged to bring your children.
The dinner costs € 30.00 for adults and € 15.00 for children under 12 years. For reservations please send an email to email@example.com.

a great piece of children’s theatre that is not just for children”
Everything is flat, pressed, squished.
A dusty, musty smell mixes with the scent of old lavender and a string lifts a flap to reveal a hidden door.
Slowly, page-by-page, the scrapbook becomes the window into a secret world and a curious life unfolds before us. Who was Josephine Bean?
Look closer because the clues are in its pages.
