Movies that matter – Film Festival @ Filmhuis and Theater aan het Spui
Mar 20 – Mar 23 all-day

This year’s Movies that Matter Festival will take place from 20 to 28 March in Filmhuis Den Haag and Theater aan het Spui. The Movies that Matter Festival, the successor to the Amnesty International Film Festival, is an annual film and debate festival about human rights and human dignity.

Every year the Movies that Matter Festival presents around 60 recent feature films and documentaries by passionate filmmakers, embedded in an extensive programme of debates and in-depth discussions. Films that stir the debate on human rights, peace and freedom. All films are in English or are subtitled.

Opening film
This year’s Movies that Matter film and debate festival will kick off with the screening of the opening film Lamentations of Judas by Dutch director Borris Gerrets. Black Angolan soldiers once fought white South Africa’s colonial war. Now they are the protagonists in a film about betrayal, free will and repentance.

Human rights and human dignity
The festival has 3 competition programmes:

Activist, a selection of documentaries on human rights defenders in partnership with Amnesty International
Camera Justitia, which focuses on the importance of the rule of law and the fight against impunity
Dutch Movies Matter, presenting Dutch feature films and documentaries that raise awareness of human rights issues.
The competitions are completed by several theme-based programmes such as Earth Matters on the theme of sustainability, and On the Move about migration. As part of Chosen by (previously Weapon of Choice) a number of prominent Dutch personalities choose their favorite film, and Chosen by YOU is a selection of films competing for the audience award.

There will also be a Best of #MtMF20 on Saturday, 28 March with 2 of the best festival films.

Debates and Q&A Sessions
Unlike other festivals, the Movies that Matter Festival provides extensive in-depth programmes for most film screenings, which allows members of the audience to interact with festival guests from all over the world in debates, Q&A sessions, workshops, talk shows, seminars and master classes. These programmes also inform the public about the background of the films and the choices that have been made during their shooting. The contribution of representatives from the world of theatre, politics, science and business often leads to surprising discussions that enable the audience to look beyond its own borders.

About the festival
The Movies that Matter Festival is an initiative of the Dutch chapter of Amnesty International. The festival’s partners are Amnesty International and the Municipality of The Hague.

More info
Visit the website of the Movies that Matter Festival for the complete programme and to purchase tickets. Don’t wait too long because film screenings sell out quickly!

The previous festival already attracted 75,000 visitors, the number is expected to be well exceeded in 2020. The program on 17 and 18 April looks very promising with parties and performances by bands and DJs in the beach tents and twice a night a big, colorful theater spectacle on the beach at Noordboulevard (between the Pier and the Zwarte Pad) with light show, acrobatics and music.
