For a whopping month and a half Valkenburg, a small city in the hilly south, hosts multiple grand Christmas activities.
The multiple underground Christmas markets in the gorgeous caves of the Cauberg are without a doubt the main attraction of the Christmas City. The merchandise is not the most diverse, but their setting is unique in the Netherlands.
The most popular ones are the the Municipal and Velvet Cave. The newest addition to the Christmas market caves is Mergelrijk, where you can find brittle marlstone all around you.
Other activities include Santa’s Village, which is the main market above ground, the Christmas Parade, the delicious Route d’Amuse and Magic Sand, a collection of breath-taking sand sculptures.
The Christmas market in the Velvet Cave is more than just a Christmas market. A visit here immerses you in a wonderful Christmas atmosphere you can find nowhere else: iconic underground ambiance, a fairy-tale decor, and, of course, stall after stall of Christmas and gift items, from rustic to luxurious. In short, a great experience, with something for everyone. And all the while, the cave’s atmosphere, with its striking wall paintings and sculptures, brings the Christmas spirit and the old, nigh-forgotten Valkenburg legends to life.

Who is Sinterklaas?
Every November children in the Netherlands eagerly await the arrival of Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) is the patron saint of children and, for as long as the Dutch can remember, he travels from Spain to the Netherlands to celebrate his name day here on 5 December.
Because he brings presents to all children, he is often compared to Father Christmas and Santa Claus. Unlike Father Christmas, however, he does not travel on a sleigh pulled by reindeer – oh no! Saint Nicholas’ preferred means of transport are a large steamboat (to make the journey from Spain to the Netherlands) and his horse called Americo (to visit all the cities, towns and villages in the Netherlands).
BIRD is launching its own festival this fall: BIRDfest! The ultimate place where different music styles merge.
Expect a musical blend of jazz, soul, hip-hop, disco, house, singer-songwriters, DJs, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists. Live bands and DJs will be taking you on a journey of discovery along the sound of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The following artists will perform at BIRDfest: Jayda G, Black Pumas, Kojey Radical, Alfa Mist, Oscar Jerome, STEAM DOWN, Charlotte Adigery and Jarreau Vandal.

With more than a kilometer of floats and boats, Amsterdam hosts the largest Saint Nicholas parade in the world. Sinterklaas sails into town with 400 Pieten and plenty of pepernoten (small spiced biscuits), welcomed by 400,000 spectators lining the canals.
Sinterklaas traditionally makes his spectacular entrance into the city by sailing down the Amstel River and following a route through the city past the Nieuwe Amstelbrug, Torontobrug, the Hoge Sluis by the Royal Theatre Carré (around 11:00 o’clock) and the Magere Brug. The waterborne parade ends at the Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum) where Sint is welcomed by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema.
Sinterklaas arrives by boat via Ledig Erf and Oudegracht and will moor his boat at Weerdsluis. From here he will mount his hours Amerigo and ride in to the center to the Domplein.
There will be lots of acts and performances along the route. The theme this year is Circus.

The Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen feature several original German bunkers from the Second World War. The figurehead of the Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen is the command bunker in the complex Widerstandsnest 318 (Verteidigungsstab Badhuisweg). A man-bunker has also been set up in this complex and a toilet bunker has been made accessible. On regular open days it is possible to visit the command bunker, and there are volunteers ready to provide information and answer questions.
Widerstandsnest 318 Scheveningen
The primary museum location of the foundation is an authentically furnished command bunker of the type 608 (Bataillons-, Abteilungs- oder Regiments-Gefechtsstand). From this bunker and nearby villas in the Second World War the military command of Stützpunkgruppe Scheveningen was conducted by the occupying forces. The bunker is largely original and gives you the unique experience of a tangible past. There are also original historical objects of German, British, Canadian and American forces on display.
In the adjacent man-bunker bunker of the type 622 (Doppelgruppenunterstand) on the Badhuisweg there is a ‘time capsule’: one of the two lounges is furnished with exclusively unrestored objects. You get the impression that the bunker has remained untouched since the end of the Second World War. In reality, most bunkers in the Netherlands were looted after the war and stripped of all valuable parts. The other room is an exhibition space for photographs, art and historical objects.
The bunkers on the Badhuisweg are located at numbers 119-133, next to De Boshut coffee house. The museum is accessible by tram line 9. Get off at the Cremerweg stop, from there it is a two minute walk to the bunker. Car is free to park within walking distance of the museum
Entrance is 4 Euro (cash) and 2 Euro for children until 12 years.

About the performance
Building from the big success of her play, Woke in late January in The Hague, the Fringe First award winner Apphia Campbell brings Black is the Color of My Voice to the Netherlands for the first time!
This acclaimed and thought-provoking play with music was originally produced in Shanghai (by Play the Spotlight Theatre), where Campbell worked as one of the city’s most-in demand performers. Inspired by the life and civil rights activism of the legendary Nina Simone, the story follows the fictional character of Mena Bordeaux, a successful jazz singer seeking salvation after the untimely death of her father, intertwining her political engagement and devastating events such as the Alabama church bombing and death of Dr Martin Luther king. Sitting alone in her room, she reflects on her journey through life which started as a young piano prodigy, destined for a life in the services of the church, to soon becoming a renowned jazz vocalist.
