Velvet Cage:

The Christmas market in the Velvet Cave is more than just a Christmas market. A visit here immerses you in a wonderful Christmas atmosphere you can find nowhere else: iconic underground ambiance, a fairy-tale decor, and, of course, stall after stall of Christmas and gift items, from rustic to luxurious. In short, a great experience, with something for everyone. And all the while, the cave’s atmosphere, with its striking wall paintings and sculptures, brings the Christmas spirit and the old, nigh-forgotten Valkenburg legends to life.

Sinterklaas Arriving in The Hague @ Scheveningen Harbour
Nov 16 all-day

For the 72nd year in a row, Sinterklaas will make his annual grand entrance in the Scheveningen harbour on Saturday, 16 November and will continue his journey through The Hague’s city centre.

The programme kicks off at 10.30 hrs. in the Scheveningen Harbour and the good bishop’s steamboat, the Pakjesboot 070, enters the harbour at around 11.15 hrs. Once Sinterklaas and his helpers come on shore, they will be officially received and greeted by 35,000 parents and children.

From Scheveningen Harbour a procession will wind its way through The Hague starting at 12.30 hrs. in the Vissershavenweg and ending at the Plein at approximately 17.30 hrs. where families will be treated to a number of live performances. The entertainment on the Plein, including all kinds of circus acts, lasts from 16.30 to 17.30 hrs.

Pepernoten and Pieten
Some 135,000 spectators along the procession route will be treated to music as well as 8,500 kilograms of pepernoten, snoepgoed and tangerines (sponsored by local businesses). Sinterklaas will also be joined this year by more than 600 crazy helpers, the Pieten.

Keep in mind that parking in Scheveningen and the city centre will be difficult and that a number of streets in the city will be closed during the procession. Read the travel advisory for Sinterklaas in The Hague.

The Sint and his entourage will form a 1-kilometre long procession, which will wind its way through Scheveningen and The Hague over the course of 5 hours. The procession will travel along the following main streets: Vissershavenweg, Keizerstraat, Frederik Hendriklaan, Aert van der Goesstraat, Reinkenstraat, Thomsonlaan, Fahrenheitstraat, Weimarstraat, Prins Hendrikstraat, Piet Heinstraat, Denneweg, Grote Marktstraat and Plein.

Who is Sinterklaas?
Every November children in the Netherlands eagerly await the arrival of Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) is the patron saint of children and, for as long as the Dutch can remember, he travels from Spain to the Netherlands to celebrate his name day here on 5 December.

Because he brings presents to all children, he is often compared to Father Christmas and Santa Claus. Unlike Father Christmas, however, he does not travel on a sleigh pulled by reindeer – oh no! Saint Nicholas’ preferred means of transport are a large steamboat (to make the journey from Spain to the Netherlands) and his horse called Americo (to visit all the cities, towns and villages in the Netherlands).

About the performance
Building from the big success of her play, Woke in late January in The Hague, the Fringe First award winner Apphia Campbell brings Black is the Color of My Voice to the Netherlands for the first time!
This acclaimed and thought-provoking play with music was originally produced in Shanghai (by Play the Spotlight Theatre), where Campbell worked as one of the city’s most-in demand performers. Inspired by the life and civil rights activism of the legendary Nina Simone, the story follows the fictional character of Mena Bordeaux, a successful jazz singer seeking salvation after the untimely death of her father, intertwining her political engagement and devastating events such as the Alabama church bombing and death of Dr Martin Luther king. Sitting alone in her room, she reflects on her journey through life which started as a young piano prodigy, destined for a life in the services of the church, to soon becoming a renowned jazz vocalist.
