Amsterdam Light Festival @ Amsterdam City Centre
Nov 28 2019 – Jan 19 2020 all-day

The Amsterdam Light Festival is set to return on 28 November 2019, running until 19 January 2020, (literally) putting Amsterdam’s beautiful city centre and its canals in the limelight.

What many people may not know, is that the light art installations of Amsterdam Light Festival are exclusively made for the festival. From an artwork in the masts of the VOC ship ‘de Amsterdam’ to the works that are harnessed above the Herengracht – they were all created with a specific location in mind.

Amsterdam Light Festival strives to create innovative and unique works of art, which is why the festival works together with a host of talented artists, architects and designers. They submitted their trailblazing ideas on account of a worldwide Call for Concepts, after which a carefully curated jury made a selection of the best ideas. These concepts were then realized by Amsterdam Light Festival.

Maybe reserve a spot on a boat to get a tour of the best light route. https://amsterdamlightfestival.com/en/book-a-tour

‘Expat meets refugee’ storytelling evening @ Church of Our Saviour
Jan 22 @ 18:00 – 21:00

‘Expat meets refugee’ storytelling evening
Het Haags Verhaal will organise a special ‘Expat meets refugee’ storytelling evening at the Church of Our Saviour on Wednesday, 22 January. The English-language programme will look at the journey people with different backgrounds have made to The Hague and how they are building their lives here.

During the first half of the evening, Executive Director of ACCESS Deborah Valentine will be interviewed about her life story. Nobody understands better than Deborah the impact of moving abroad; she has lived and worked in 11 countries. She now makes her home in The Hague. She will tell us about the expat life in our city, in part based on her work with ACCESS, a volunteer organisation committed to helping internationals settle in The Hague.

The second half of the evening will feature the life story of Sahar Hossini, who would like to feel like this is home but her life is still in limbo. She came to the Netherlands from Iran when she was 16 years old and – 10 years further – she still does not have a residence permit. Here she was given opportunities not afforded to girls in Iran: she was able to study. But she is not allowed to work. As a volunteer at the Humanity House and Dutch Council for Refugees she helps other refugees settle here. She tells us about her life and the lives of other refugees.

About Het Haags Verhaal

Jan 25 all-day
Afbeeldingsresultaat voor chinese new year 2020 amsterdam

Festivities traditionally take place on Amsterdam’s Dam Square and around the historic Nieuwmarkt/Zeedijk neighbourhood. Each year a loud and lively parade makes its way through the streets to celebrate a new zodiac animal: it’s the Year of the Rat in 2020. The Lion and Dragon Dance Parade starts at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple on Zeedijk at around 1 pm Fo Guang Shan usually has a whole cultural program of New Year activities. The parade route goes along the Geldersekade to Nieuwmarkt, where a street party follows the parade. Expect to hear lots of noise from drums, firecrackers, and fireworks.

Before or afterward head to one of the tasty Asian restaurants in the neighborhood. Keep in mind places will likely be busy so make reservations if you can.

Here are some tips:

Dim sum at Oriental City will make your tummy happy. On Saturday and Sunday you may have to wait in line for a bit. www.oriental-city.com
Nam Kee is the classic choice when you are going for Chinese food in Amsterdam. The menu is super extensive and the portions are huge.
Try out Tibetan food at Tibet Restaurant. If you like it hot and spicy, order some of the Sichuan dishes.
At A-Fusion you should be able to find something for everyone in your group. They serve a good mix of modern Chinese Asian fusion dishes.
Thai food is always a popular choice and the food at Thai Bird or the snackbar across the street hits the spot.

Martin Luther King Tribute and Dinner @ Hotel Den Haag Wassenaar
Jan 26 all-day

Martin Luther King Tribute and Dinner
On Sunday, 26 January Overseas Americans Remember (OAR) will sponsor the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute and Dinner at the Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar. The dinner and commemoration are geared to families.

It was in 1986 that the Martin Luther King holiday was first commemorated in the United States as well as by a group of American women in Wassenaar. The tribute to Dr. King has been held each year in The Hague since that time.

Civil rights movement
When one thinks about the Civil Rights Movement, there are no words. Dr. King led the movement and the hundreds of thousands who followed him shared his belief in non-violence and his love and commitment to the United States of America and the dignity of people everywhere.

So much has improved since Dr. King first spoke of ‘His Dream’, but the battle to eliminate racism and discrimination is still a task for today and tomorrow. The message and motto of Martin Luther King Day is a challenge for all people: ‘Make this a day on, not a day off!’ In other words, do something to make Dr. King’s dream a reality.

Featured speakers
The commemoration will feature a number of distinguished speakers as well as music integral to the civil rights movement.

More information
Come on Sunday, 26 January at 17.30 hrs. for a simple dinner full of friendship and lots of goodwill at Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar (Zijdeweg 54). You are encouraged to bring your children.
