Christmas Market Velvet Cave @ Valkenburg
Nov 15 2019 – Jan 5 2020 all-day

For a whopping month and a half Valkenburg, a small city in the hilly south, hosts multiple grand Christmas activities.
The multiple underground Christmas markets in the gorgeous caves of the Cauberg are without a doubt the main attraction of the Christmas City. The merchandise is not the most diverse, but their setting is unique in the Netherlands.
The most popular ones are the the Municipal and Velvet Cave. The newest addition to the Christmas market caves is Mergelrijk, where you can find brittle marlstone all around you.

Other activities include Santa’s Village, which is the main market above ground, the Christmas Parade, the delicious Route d’Amuse and Magic Sand, a collection of breath-taking sand sculptures.

Velvet Cage:

The Christmas market in the Velvet Cave is more than just a Christmas market. A visit here immerses you in a wonderful Christmas atmosphere you can find nowhere else: iconic underground ambiance, a fairy-tale decor, and, of course, stall after stall of Christmas and gift items, from rustic to luxurious. In short, a great experience, with something for everyone. And all the while, the cave’s atmosphere, with its striking wall paintings and sculptures, brings the Christmas spirit and the old, nigh-forgotten Valkenburg legends to life.

Amsterdam Light Festival @ Amsterdam City Centre
Nov 28 2019 – Jan 19 2020 all-day

The Amsterdam Light Festival is set to return on 28 November 2019, running until 19 January 2020, (literally) putting Amsterdam’s beautiful city centre and its canals in the limelight.

What many people may not know, is that the light art installations of Amsterdam Light Festival are exclusively made for the festival. From an artwork in the masts of the VOC ship ‘de Amsterdam’ to the works that are harnessed above the Herengracht – they were all created with a specific location in mind.

Amsterdam Light Festival strives to create innovative and unique works of art, which is why the festival works together with a host of talented artists, architects and designers. They submitted their trailblazing ideas on account of a worldwide Call for Concepts, after which a carefully curated jury made a selection of the best ideas. These concepts were then realized by Amsterdam Light Festival.

Maybe reserve a spot on a boat to get a tour of the best light route. https://amsterdamlightfestival.com/en/book-a-tour

Atlantikwall Museum open on Sundays only @ Scheveningen
Dec 15 all-day

The Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen feature several original German bunkers from the Second World War. The figurehead of the Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen is the command bunker in the complex Widerstandsnest 318 (Verteidigungsstab Badhuisweg). A man-bunker has also been set up in this complex and a toilet bunker has been made accessible. On regular open days it is possible to visit the command bunker, and there are volunteers ready to provide information and answer questions.

Widerstandsnest 318 Scheveningen
The primary museum location of the foundation is an authentically furnished command bunker of the type 608 (Bataillons-, Abteilungs- oder Regiments-Gefechtsstand). From this bunker and nearby villas in the Second World War the military command of Stützpunkgruppe Scheveningen was conducted by the occupying forces. The bunker is largely original and gives you the unique experience of a tangible past. There are also original historical objects of German, British, Canadian and American forces on display.

Man’s bunker
In the adjacent man-bunker bunker of the type 622 (Doppelgruppenunterstand) on the Badhuisweg there is a ‘time capsule’: one of the two lounges is furnished with exclusively unrestored objects. You get the impression that the bunker has remained untouched since the end of the Second World War. In reality, most bunkers in the Netherlands were looted after the war and stripped of all valuable parts. The other room is an exhibition space for photographs, art and historical objects.

Accessibility
The bunkers on the Badhuisweg are located at numbers 119-133, next to De Boshut coffee house. The museum is accessible by tram line 9. Get off at the Cremerweg stop, from there it is a two minute walk to the bunker. Car is free to park within walking distance of the museum

Entrance is 4 Euro (cash) and 2 Euro for children until 12 years.

English Theatre: Charles Dickens – A Christmas Carol @ Theater aan het Spui
Dec 17 – Dec 22 all-day

Can Christmas start without Ashley Ramsden performing Dickens’ all time seasonal story A CHRISTMAS CAROL? By now we have to conclude it can NOT!
For the 13th year in a row Ashley Ramsden returns with this still so relevant story about greed, poverty, insights, dreams and redemption. Can we still learn from this wise tale? Is it possible in this world that seems to be more divided than ever to share, live together and listen to one another? The gap between haves and have-nots seems to widen. And the difference in what is true and not-true (anymore) is no longer distinguishable. This story brings it all down to the essence that by sharing and considering the other we can only gain. A wonderful way to start the season of good will! Let’s share it!
