Japanese Garden Open @ clingendael estate
ALL DAY
Japanese Garden Open @ Clingendael Estate | Den Haag | Zuid-Holland | Netherlands

The magnificent Japanese Garden will reopen its doors for 6 weeks only from Saturday, 27 April to Sunday, 9 June so you can admire the spring colours in their full glory. The garden will be open daily from 9.00 to 20.00 hrs. during this 6-week period.

History
The Japanese Garden was created in the beginning of the 20th century by the former owner of the country estate of Clingendael, Marguérite M. Baroness van Brienen (1871-1939), also called Lady Daisy. Lady Daisy sailed off a number of times by ship to Japan and brought back to the Netherlands a number of lanterns, a water cask, sculptures, the pavilion, the little bridges and several plants. The original design with the serene pond, meandering brook and the winding pathways has remained intact all these years.

Fragile
The Municipality of The Hague has always taken great care of the Japanese Garden because of its uniqueness and tremendous historical value. The garden was placed on the list of national historical monuments in 2001. Due to its fragility, the garden can be visited only during 2 short periods of the year.

More info
You can find more information under Japanese Garden in Clingendael Park.

Solo’s at the Sea @ beach club de fuut
ALL DAY
Solo's at the Sea @ Beach Club de Fuut | Den Haag | Zuid-Holland | Netherlands

Solo’s @The Sea
Talented choreographers, dancers and actors will present a solo or monologue in ‘Solo’s @The Sea’. The Hague-based dance company De Dutch Don’t Dance Division (DeDDDD) is organising another edition of this mini festival at beach pavilion De Fuut from 1 to 31 May.

A dancer or actor must have a strong personality in order to perform a good solo. A performance on the beach means there is no backdrop apart from the ever changing view of the sea, sky and dunes.

The concept behind ‘Solo’s @The Sea’ was initiated by artistic leaders Thom Stuart and Rinus Sprong for the first time in 2008. It is now part of the annual programme of De Dutch Don’t Dance Division. Every solo piece is specially created for this location.

The audience will enjoy an ever-changing and intimate programme during a 3-course dinner. Thanks to the relaxed atmosphere at beach pavilion De Fuut, it will be a very ‘light’ performance. A bit of Dutch may be spoken.

More info
‘Solo’s @The Sea’ will be performed by De Dutch Don’t Dance Division from Wednesday, 1 May to Friday, 31 May at beach pavilion De Fuut on the Zuiderstrand (Strandslag 10) in The Hague. Take Tram 12 to the Markenseplein stop.

The evening starts at 18.30 hrs. Tickets cost € 42.50 including a 3-course dinner and can be reserved in advance by sending an email to info@defuut.nl.

Bunker Open Day @ Various Places at the seaside | Netherlands

The Hague is organising an open day for the city’s bunkers on Saturday, 25 May. Come and discover these fascinating concrete giants which are normally closed to the public. With 14 locations in The Hague.

The Hague and Scheveningen were literally turned into a fortress during the German occupation. The bunkers remain silent witnesses of this period. The construction of the Atlantic Wall coastal defence and fortification had other radical repercussions. Entire neighborhoods had to make way for an anti-tank ditch 8 km long and 300 meters wide. In addition 100,000 people were forced to leave their homes and find refuge elsewhere.

A day of activities
During the Bunker Open Day you will discover the stories of the German occupation and the destruction of The Hague and what it meant to live in a city at war.

Watch a re-enactment of the Able Compagnie or Company West, take a guided walking tour along the bunkers of the ‘Hauptkampflinie’ in Benoordenhout or visit Commandobunker V149 in the Belvédèrepark which will be excavated especially for this day.

More info
Bunker Day in The Hague is from 10.00 to 17.00 hrs. on Saturday, 25 May. An all-inclusive ticket costs € 6.00 for adults and € 3.00 for children 4 to 12 years old. Tickets can be purchased online until Monday, 20 May or at nearly every bunker on Bunker Open Day.

You are then entitled to the entrance to all the bunkers, guided tours and museums in the participating towns and cities along the North Sea coast.

Atlantikwall Museum open on Sundays only @ scheveningen
ALL DAY

The Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen feature several original German bunkers from the Second World War. The figurehead of the Atlantikwall Museum Scheveningen is the command bunker in the complex Widerstandsnest 318 (Verteidigungsstab Badhuisweg). A man-bunker has also been set up in this complex and a toilet bunker has been made accessible. On regular open days it is possible to visit the command bunker, and there are volunteers ready to provide information and answer questions.

Widerstandsnest 318 Scheveningen
The primary museum location of the foundation is an authentically furnished command bunker of the type 608 (Bataillons-, Abteilungs- oder Regiments-Gefechtsstand). From this bunker and nearby villas in the Second World War the military command of Stützpunkgruppe Scheveningen was conducted by the occupying forces. The bunker is largely original and gives you the unique experience of a tangible past. There are also original historical objects of German, British, Canadian and American forces on display.

Man’s bunker
In the adjacent man-bunker bunker of the type 622 (Doppelgruppenunterstand) on the Badhuisweg there is a ‘time capsule’: one of the two lounges is furnished with exclusively unrestored objects. You get the impression that the bunker has remained untouched since the end of the Second World War. In reality, most bunkers in the Netherlands were looted after the war and stripped of all valuable parts. The other room is an exhibition space for photographs, art and historical objects.

Accessibility
The bunkers on the Badhuisweg are located at numbers 119-133, next to De Boshut coffee house. The museum is accessible by tram line 9. Get off at the Cremerweg stop, from there it is a two minute walk to the bunker. Car is free to park within walking distance of the museum

Entrance is 4 Euro (cash) and 2 Euro for children until 12 years.
