Exhibition: Chantal Akerman @ Eye Filmmuseum
Jun 11 – Aug 30 all-day

Chantal Akerman PassagesSolo exhibition of work by Chantal Akerman

This spring, Eye Filmmuseum is presenting a major solo exhibition of work by Chantal Akerman. Akerman was one of the first film directors who made the switch to visual art. She rose to fame in the 1970s as a feminist avant-garde filmmaker, and midway through the 1990s, she discovered the possibilities of the art gallery.

In 1995 she created a large spatial installation on 24 monitors based on D’Est, a film she originally made as a documentary. This marked the start of her ‘second career’ within the world of visual art.

The exhibition features eight of Akerman’s film installations. In addition to D’Est, they include a.o. Woman Sitting after a Killing (2001)Tombée de nuit sur Shanghai (2007-2008) and her final work NOW (2015)

Exhibition: Extra Large @ Kunsthal
Jun 11 2020 – Jan 3 2021 all-day

2. Pablo Picasso Women at their toilette 1971-1977_LR.pngExtra Large

For the first time in the Netherlands, Kunsthal Rotterdam is presenting a large-scale retrospective of imposing tapestries based on designs by renowned artists like Pablo Picasso, Le Corbusier, Miró, Vasarely and Louise Bourgeois. The exhibition ‘Extra Large’ focuses on a period of a hundred years, with tapestries made directly after the First World War up until now, and reveals a virtually unknown aspect in the bodies of work of many modern and contemporary artists. They have been using the age-old weaving technique as the point of departure for their textile art while constantly reinterpreting it. Most of the sixty works were produced at the historical institute ‘Manufacture des Gobelins’ in Paris. With their combination of artistic finesse and extraordinary craftsmanship, these metres-high, handwoven tapestries are of an unrivalled quality and a joy to behold, and show how surprisingly modern the traditional craft of weaving still is.

Exhibition: Street Photography by Vivian Maier @ Foam
Jun 11 – Sep 13 all-day

Street photography by Vivian Maier at Foam

This spring Foam presents the colourful works of Vivian Maier in the new exhibition Works in Color.

Mostly known for her black and white photography, Vivian Maier is an icon in American street photography. A genre mainly dominated by photographers such as Robert Frank, Joel Meyerowitz and Lee Friedlander. Maier’s observant eye as an unknown outsider and as a woman makes her work a significant addition to the canon of photography. This exhibition at Foam focuses on a lesser-known aspect of her work: over 60 colour photographs from the period between 1956 – 1986.

Works in Color shows street scenes in Chicago, – the city where Maier lived for much of her life – featuring people, objects, billboards and shop windows. Her work in colour seems altogether playful and tongue in cheek.

Kroller Mueller Museum @ Veluwe National Park
Jun 16 @ 10:16

Jardin d'émail - WikipediaThe Kröller Müller museum in the Veluwe national park is welcoming its visitors back as well. The museum has a large Van Gogh collection and another highlight is that the Jardin d’émail (1974) by French artist Jean Dubuffet has undergone five years of restoration work and is now fit to be seen again.
This is a nice day out, you can combine it with a long walk in the national park or you can grab one of the free white bikes and discover the beautiful park en velo. You have to pay entrance to the park anyhow, so better make the best of it. 🙂
